Pensacola State College sophomore Sidney Smiga capped her Pirate career with a determined performance at the NJCAA Half Marathon National Championship in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on November 11, 2025. Battling harsh conditions, Smiga completed the 13.1-mile race in 2 hours and 13 minutes, securing her second appearance on the national stage in as many years. The meet drew top NJCAA runners from across the country, offering a challenging finale to her collegiate journey.
This year's championship presented a stark contrast to Smiga's freshman debut at nationals in 2024. Her first half marathon, held in Richmond, Virginia, featured milder weather and a flatter course, allowing her to record an impressive 1 hour and 56 minute finish. Iowa, however, delivered freezing temperatures, strong winds, and rolling inclines, demanding significant grit and mental toughness from competitors. Despite the adversity, Smiga pushed through the cold and snow to complete one of the most difficult races of her career.
Coach Watkins praised Smiga's resilience, noting that her unwavering effort reflected the heart she brought to the team throughout her time at Pensacola State. "I'm extremely proud of Sidney's perseverance in the cold and the snow," Watkins said, adding warm congratulations as Smiga prepares for graduation. With two national championships behind her, Smiga leaves a legacy of dedication, toughness, and steady improvement—qualities that will continue to carry her beyond her PSC career.
