The Pirates struggled to find momentum Wednesday, falling in both games of a doubleheader against Gulf Coast. The day opened with a tough outing in the opener, as the Commodores controlled the game from the start and handed the Pirates a 10–0 loss in five innings.
Offense was hard to come by in Game 1, with the Pirates managing just two hits. Kate Luyten and Brea Holley each recorded a single, but Gulf Coast pitching kept the Pirates off balance throughout, capitalizing early and consistently to put the game away quickly.
Game 2 told a very different story early on, as the Pirates came out with renewed energy. They struck first in the opening inning, scoring two runs highlighted by a clutch double from Megan LaMorte. The Pirates continued to apply pressure in the third inning, building a 5–1 advantage after RBI hits from LaMorte and Karlee McLean gave them control of the game.
However, the momentum shifted in the fifth inning when Gulf Coast's bats came alive. The Commodores surged ahead with a big inning to take a 7–5 lead and never relinquished it, pulling away late to secure a 12–5 victory and complete the sweep.
Despite the loss, the Pirates found positives in Game 2 at the plate. Luyten, Holley and LaMorte each finished with two hits, while LaMorte drove in key runs to spark the early offense.
