The Pensacola State Pirates traveled to Panama City on Saturday and came away with a hard‑fought doubleheader sweep of Gulf Coast, showcasing strong pitching, timely hitting, and clutch defense.
Game One: Pensacola State 3, Gulf Coast 2
Game one saw Pirate starter Chevelle Kingsley in control throughout, scattering three hits and striking out six. Gulf Coast struck first with a run in the opening inning, but Kingsley settled in and kept the Commodores off balance the rest of the way.
The Pirates answered in the second inning when Megan LaMorte reached on an error and was driven in by an RBI single from Megan McKeown to tie the game. Pensacola State took the lead in the sixth as Kate Luyten led off the inning with a single, was bunted over, and eventually scored on a hit by Morgan Maples. An important insurance run in the seventh proved to be the difference.
Gulf Coast made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh with an inside‑the‑park home run to pull within one, but a flyout to center field ended the threat and sealed the win. Luyten led the offense, going 3‑for‑4 with an RBI, while McKeown finished 2‑for‑3 with an RBI.
Game Two: Pensacola State 4, Gulf Coast 3
The Pirates carried their momentum into game two, jumping out to an early 4‑0 lead behind four hits and a Gulf Coast error. The Commodores responded with one run in the second inning and two more in the third to cut the deficit to one, setting up a tense finish.
Kika Bonora earned the win in the circle, throwing 3.2 innings while allowing just three hits and no earned runs. Layna Lowry came on in relief and delivered under pressure, pitching 3.1 innings and surrendering only two hits while striking out three to earn the save.
The bottom of the seventh provided plenty of drama as Gulf Coast put the leadoff batter on with a triple and brought the top of the lineup to the plate. After a walk, Lowry caught a popped up bunt and struck out the three hitter before walking the cleanup batter to load the bases. A flyout to left sealed the game.
At the plate, the Pirates turned in a strong team effort. Kate Luyten went a perfect 2‑for‑2, Karlee McLean was 3‑for‑3, and Morgan Maples added another multi‑hit performance, finishing 2‑for‑4.
