It was a tough week at the plate and in the field for the PSC softball team, as the Pirates dropped three games by a single run, despite strong individual performances and solid pitching throughout the stretch.
PSC opened the week on Wednesday with a 2–1 loss to John A. Logan. The Volunteers capitalized early, using a pair of doubles to build a 2–0 advantage. The Pirates answered in the later innings when Kate Luyten blasted her first home run of the season, providing PSC's lone run of the contest. Offensively, Megan LaMorte and Brea Holley were perfect at the plate, each going 2-for-2 with a walk. In the circle, Layna Lowry delivered a strong outing, scattering five hits while striking out five. Lowry allowed just one earned run, keeping PSC within striking distance all game.
The Pirates then traveled to Panama City Beach on Friday to compete in the JUCO Showdown, where they faced a strong Copiah-Lincoln squad. PSC struck first in the top of the second inning as Megan LaMorte launched a solo home run to give the Pirates a 1–0 lead. Defensive miscues in the third inning, however, allowed Co-Lin to take a 2–1 advantage. LaMorte continued her big day at the plate in the fourth, driving in the tying run with an RBI double. Once again, errors proved costly, as Copiah-Lincoln regained the lead later in the inning and held on for a 3–2 victory. Chevelle Kingsley was impressive in the circle, allowing five hits while striking out six and giving up zero earned runs. Megan McKeown joined LaMorte with a two-hit performance.
PSC's final game of the weekend was another heartbreaking loss, falling 4–3 to Itawamba. The Tribe jumped out to a 2–0 lead in the first inning, but the Pirates responded quickly. McKeown cut the deficit in half in the second with a line-drive home run, and Holley followed in the third with a solo shot to tie the game. PSC briefly took the lead when Karlee McLean doubled to score the go-ahead run, making it 3–2. Itawamba tied the game with a leadoff home run in the sixth and pushed across the winning run in the seventh with the help of an error. Lowry went the distance for PSC, striking out a season-high nine batters while allowing just one earned run.
