Softball Set to Begin 2021 Season in Clearwater

The Pensacola State softball team is on the road to kickoff the 2021 season this weekend.

They are traveling to Clearwater, Florida for the JUCO Kickoff Classic. On Friday, they will face College of Central Florida at 12.30 pm (all est) and St. John's River at 5.30 pm. Then on Saturday they will faceoff with Lake Sumter State College at 8.30 am before closing out the weekend against Indian River State College at 11.00 am. 

The Pirates were 21-4 last season before COVID-19 shutdown NJCAA athletics. They are returning seven sophomores from last years roster who all saw significant playing time last year.

Jorja Barrett will return to the circle as one of PSC's pitchers. The Australian was 10-3 last season with a 1.10 ERA and 72 strikeouts. Maddy Childs is a returning catcher who batted .307 and had a team leading five homeruns. Ellie Hansen started every game at shortstop and had the highest batting average among the returners with a solid .463. Sajarie Jones split time between the outfield and infield while batting .370 with five stolen bases. Monique Poitevin saw time at first base and drove in 18 RBI's while hitting .288. Susanna Soldi joined PSC from Italy in January and batted .381 with 25 RBI's. Finally Shaylan Whatman, another Aussie, anchored the infield at third base while sporting a .255 batting average and .333 on base percentage.

Pensacola has added seven freshman to the team along with two transfers. Kelsi Bargman came to Pensacola from Helena, AL and will roam the outfield. Avery Beauchaine is a local product from J.M. Tate High School and will see time in the pitcher's circle. Jaycie Brookshire brought her big bat to PSC from Florida powerhouse Oakleaf High School. Mya Geros in another Aussie who is a switch hitter that can play middle infield and outfield. Jessica Ford is a versatile defender, power hitter who transferred from James Madison University. Abby Gatza came south from Canada and is a catcher/corner. Heleena Reinhardt is a righty pitcher from Orlando, FL. Adriana Sierra transferred from Embry-Riddle (FL) who bounces between the middle infield and outfield. Rounding out the new class is the final Aussie Jenna Trim. Trim is a utility player who is also expected to see some time in the circle.
