No. 22 Pensacola State continued its strong conference start with a commanding 72–57 home victory over No. 10 Tallahassee State, marking its second win over a top-10 opponent in league play. The Pirates set the tone early, jumping out strong before Tallahassee responded with a run of its own. After six lead changes in the first half, Tallahassee briefly took a one-point lead - 72their largest of the night - before Pensacola regained control and carried a four-point advantage into halftime.
The second half belonged entirely to the Pirates. Pensacola State came out of the locker room with energy and never looked back, clamping down defensively and holding the No. 10 team in the country to just 24 second-half points. That defensive effort fueled a decisive run that pushed the lead to as many as 15 and allowed the Pirates to close the game comfortably.
A major factor in the win was Pensacola's perimeter defense. Alex Madrid and Josh Middlebrooks shared the responsibility of guarding Tallahassee's leading scorer Shane Cherry (19.7 ppg), holding him to just nine points on 3-of-10 shooting. Their defensive intensity set the tone for the entire group.
Offensively, Pensacola State was balanced and efficient. Deven Bates delivered a dominant all-around performance, finishing with 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, a season-high 15 rebounds, and a team-best five assists. Malick Sene controlled the paint with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting and 11 rebounds, while Sean Owens added 13 points and four assists, leading the team with three made threes. Ethan McDonald chipped in with a steady 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists.
With the win, Pensacola State moves to 2–0 in conference play, having defeated two top-10 teams in the process. The Pirates will look to keep the momentum rolling when they hit the road Saturday (Jan. 14) to face No. 6 Northwest Florida.
