Pensacola State earned a signature win with a hard-fought 75–71 victory over No. 7 Chipola, outlasting one of the nation's top programs in a game that was tightly contested from start to finish. The matchup featured constant momentum swings, with six ties and five lead changes as both teams traded runs throughout the night.
Chipola relied heavily on its trademark zone defense, but Pensacola State consistently found ways to generate quality looks. The Pirates drilled nine three-pointers in the first half, showcasing sharp ball movement and spacing. Chipola kept pace behind seven first-half threes of its own and advantages at the free-throw line and on the glass, trailing by just three at halftime.
While Chipola battled physically, Pensacola State separated itself with efficiency and execution. The Pirates posted better shooting percentages across the board, made more threes, recorded more assists, and committed just three turnovers for the entire game—an elite level of discipline against a top-10 opponent.
Pensacola's entire starting five made meaningful contributions. Alex Madrid anchored the defensive effort with multiple hustle plays, adding four rebounds and three assists while setting the tone on that end. Malick Sene delivered a strong interior performance with 15 points and six rebounds on 5-for-7 shooting. Sean Owens matched that output with 15 points and a team-high six assists, knocking down four threes and calmly sinking two key free throws to push the lead to five late. Ethan McDonald also scored 15 points, connecting on 5-of-7 attempts from deep while adding three assists and hitting a clutch three in the last minute as well.
The night belonged to Deven Bates, who earned game MVP honors with a dominant all-around performance. Bates finished with 28 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals, shooting 10-for-18 from the field and 4-for-8 from three. He sealed the win at the line in the final seconds, knocking down two free throws to put the game away.
It was a complete, poised, and high-level performance from Pensacola State that showcased their toughness, execution, and ability to rise to the moment against elite competition.
