Softball Closes Out Season at Conference Playoff

The Pensacola State softball team saw their season come to an end this weekend when they traveled to Gulf Coast for the conference playoff. They won the opening game against Northwest Florida State before they fell in a best of three series to Gulf Coast. Continue reading below for individual game recaps.

PSC 8 NWF 4

Pensacola nabbed the lead late in the the game and held on for an 8-4 victory over NWF in the opening round of the conference playoff. 

The Pirates got on the board first when they plated three runs in the top of the second inning. Alexis Guzman started things with a single and was followed by a double from Natalie Sorensen to set the table for Ana Reyes to drive in the first run. She was followed by a single from Kat McGlamry to give PSC a 2-0 lead before Sadie Rusteika drove in the third run with a single up the middle.

Northwest responded in their half of the inning with a solo home run to make the score 3-1 and then they used another home run in the third inning to knot the score at 3-3.

The score held until the top of the fifth when the Pirates scored three runs courtesy of a double from Ana Reyes to make it 6-3. 

The top of the sixth saw the Pirates add two more runs when Raquel Latta reached on an error and Madison Myers singled. Both runners scored on a single off the bat of Kaeleen Koehler to extend the lead to 8-3. 

The Raiders threatened in the bottom of the seventh and added one run before a fly out ended the game.

Pensacola tallied 12 hits in the game with Ana Reyes leading the way going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI's. Kaeleen Koehler (2B, 2 RBI), Kat McGlamry (RBI) and Natalie Sorensen (2B) each recorded two hits.

Savannah Foster took over in the circle in the second inning and picked up the win. She struck out six batters while only allowing two runs.

The win was Head Coach Lyndsey Angus' 100th career victory.

PSC 6 Gulf Coast 12

After defeating NWF the Pirates immediately played the first game of a three game series against Gulf Coast. The Commodores took an eight run lead after two innings and the Pirates tried to creep back into the game, but fell short.

They finally put two runs on the board in the third inning when Alexis Guzman drove in two runs with a double to left field. Gulf Coast used a 2-RBI double of their own in the bottom of the inning to regain the eight run lead.

The top of the fourth saw the Pirates score two more runs when Raquel Latta walked and Madison Myers singled to setup an RBI single from Sadie Rusteika and Kaeleen Koehler

Pensacola plated two more runs in the fifth courtesy of an RBI single from Madison Myers and a passed ball to make it 10-6.

Gulf Coast rounded out the games scoring in the bottom of the inning when they pushed two more runs across.

Raquel Latta was 2-for-2 with two walks in the game while Sadie Rusteika and Madison Myers both recorded two hits and an RBI.

Shayne O'Connell got the start and was relieved by Latta in the second inning.

The Pirates ran out of steam in game two of the series and they saw their season come to a close.

Gulf Coast scored two runs in the top of the first before PSC answered with a 2-run home run from Alexis Guzman. The score remained knotted at two until the fourth inning when the Commodores plated one run to take the lead that they would not relinquish.

Guzman was the leading hitter for PSC as she went 2-for-4 while Kaeleen Koehler (2B), Natalie Sorensen and Raquel Latta each added one hit.

Savannah Foster gave a valiant effort on the mound as she threw six innings and struck out six. Kaeleen Koehler came on in the seventh inning and only gave up one hit while striking out one.

Pensacola State closes out their season with a 28-22 record overall.
