The Pirate softball team traveled to Brewton, Alabama on Wednesday and handily defeated Coastal Alabama-East twice.
They got things started in the first when Madison Marshall drove in the first run of the game with a single to left field and then the Pirates used an error to make the lead 2-0. The scoring continued in the second inning when another error and a passed ball extended the lead to 4-0.
The top of the fourth saw back-to-back doubles from Kayla Leibman and Kaeleen Koehler plate two more runs for PSC. In the bottom half of the inning the Warhawks were able to push one run across to make it 6-1.
The Pirates answered back in the top of the fifth when Shelby Thornsberry drove a 3-run home run over the left field fence. It was Thornsberry's first colleigiate home run and gave the Pirates a commanding 9-1 lead that they held on to and ended the game after five innings due to the eight run mercy rule.
Leibman and Marshall both ended up being 2-for-3 in the game while Danielle de Ruiter was 2-for-2. Jensen Strickland picked up the win for PSC as she started and threw three innings and only allowed one hit while striking out two. Brittney Rayfield closed out the game and only gave up two hits while she struck out one.
Game two saw much of the same as the Pirates exploded for thirteen hits and won 8-2. Three doubles in the third from Leibman, Alexis Guzman and Marshall helped PSC out to a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth, Koehler and Marshall each singled to drive in runs and extended the lead to 6-0. The Pirate defense did allow one run each in the fourth and fifth, but then they shut down the Warhawks the rest of the game.
Offensively PSC added two more runs in the top of the seventh courtesy of an RBI-single from de Ruiter and a passed ball.
It was a pitcher by committee game as Shelby Griffin received the start and win after throwing three solid innings. Savannah Foster took care of the next three innings and struck out a game high four batters before Kaeleen Koehler entered to close the game out in the seventh.
The Pirates will kickoff Panhandle play on Tuesday, March 13th when they travel to Tallahassee for a doubleheader.
