The Pirate softball team hosted a tournament this past weekend and picked up four solid wins to improve their overall record to 6-3. They exploded for 41 runs while the pitching staff did not give up an earned run all weekend. Continue reading below for individual game recaps.
Florence Darlington Tech (FDT) 0 Pensacola (PSC) 6
Jensen Strickland shut down FDT, throwing a complete game shutout and leading the Pirates to a 6-0 victory on Thursday night. PSC secured the victory thanks to four runs in the fifth inning. Lia Johnson started things off with a walk and proceeded to score on a double off the bat of Kayla Leibman. The pattern continued for the next two batters as Kaeleen Koehler and Strickland both had RBI doubles to make the score 5-0. The Pirates scored their last run of the game on a sacrifice fly from Shelby Thornsberry.
Strickland was 2-for-2 in the game with a double, RBI and walk. Leibman and Thornsberry were both 1-for-1 with a double, RBI, run scored and walk. Koehler ended up going 1-for-3 with a double, 2 RBI's and run scored.
Strickland improved her record to 3-1 as she struck out five while scattering five hits.
Roane State 1 PSC 10 (5 innings)
In their first game on Friday the Pirates won big over Roane State 10-1 in five innings. The offense got things started in the second when Natalie Sorensen drove in the first run of the game with a single up the middle. PSC plated two more runs on a double from Brittney Rayfield and used a passed ball to make it 4-0. They added two more runs in the third when Madison Marshall walked and then later scored on a single from Danielle de Ruiter. Sorensen then followed with another RBI single to push the score to 6-0. The Pirates then capped things off in the fifth when Kaeleen Koehler and de Ruiter both singled and eventually scored on errors. Lia Johnson then ended the game early with a walk off 2-RBI triple.
Sorensen was the leading hitter going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI's while de Ruiter was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Savannah Foster picked up her first win of the season as she struck out eight and only gave up one hit in the game.
FDT 0 PSC 21 (5 innings)
Kaeleen Koehler had all the right stuff on Friday on the mound as she threw a no-hitter and collected her first win of the season. The Pirates got things started in the first when Koehler homered to make it 2-0 right out of the gate. Subsequently Madison Marshall and Natalie Sorensen got in on the home run action and it was quickly 5-0. After tacking one more run on in the second PSC batted around in the third as they took advantage of multiple walks and back-to-back doubles from Kayla Leibman and Koehler to increase the score to 11-0. In the fourth PSC tallied 10 runs on eight hits with the highlights being 3-run home run from Marshall and a grand slam from Kayla Leibman.
Leibman drove in an impressive seven runs as she went 4-for-4 with the grand slam and two doubles. Marshall was 2-for-2 with a home run and five RBI's while Koehler ended up going 3-for-4 with three RBI's, a double and home run.
In the circle Koehler struck out four and only walked one batter to improve her record to 1-1.
Roane State 1 PSC 4
The Pirates closed out the weekend with a 4-1 victory over Roane State. They struck first in the second inning when Madison Marshall doubled and Shelby Thornsberry singled to set the table for Danielle de Ruiter to drive them both in with a double. They extended their lead to 4-0 in the third when Kaeleen Koehler drove in a run with a double and Marshall followed with an RBI single.
Roane capitalized on a couple errors to push one run across in the fifth inning and then threatened with bases loaded in the seventh before right fielder Natalie Sorensen caught a deep fly ball and then threw out a runner at the plate to end the game.
Koehler picked up the win as she struck out three in the course of four innings while Savannah Foster picked up the save in the seventh.
