The Pirate softball team kicked off Panhandle Conference play last week and ended up going 2-2. On Tuesday they dropped two games to Gulf Coast before bouncing back on Thursday and handily sweeping Tallahassee. Please continue reading below for individual game recaps.
Game 1: PSC 1 Connors St. 2
The first game against Connors State on Sunday was a tough on as the Pirates lost the lead late in a 2-1 defeat. The Pirates took an early lead in the second inning when they scored a run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lia Johnson. In the fifth Connors State pushed two runs across by capitalizing on a string of walks and hit by pitches.
Game 1: PSC 8 Faulkner State 2
An early lead helped propel the Pirates to victory in game one against Faulkner State. The Pirates grabbed the lead in the second inning when Madison Marshall led off with a double and later scored on a single from Jensen Strickland. Lia Johnson followed with an RBI single to make the score 2-0.
Game 1: PSC 6 Jefferson Davis 0
The Pirates returned to action versus Jefferson Davis on Tuesday and picked up two wins to bring their record to 13-6. In game one Erika Greek had a strong performance on the mound throwing a shutout and only allowing two hits while striking out nine batters.
Madison Marshall launched a solo home run in the fourth to finally get the Pirates on the board.
The Lady Pirate basketball team placed two players, Nia Johnson and Ahyiona Vason, on the First-team All-Panhandle Conference Team.
Johnson is a guard who hails from Sandersville, Georgia and in conference play she averaged 13.5 points, 2.3 steals and 2.1 assists.
Vason is a point guard who came to Pensacola from Montgomery, Alabama and she averaged 10.4 points, 4.9 assists and 1.
The Lady Pirates ended their 2016-2017 campaign with a 72-59 loss to no. 6 nationally ranked Chipola College. Nia Johnson had an exceptional night as she poured in 30 points on the night by shooting 13-0f-21 from the field and 3-of-7 from 3-point range. Ahyiona Vason dished out a game high seven assists and Naterria Luster and Autumn Jones each grabbed five rebounds.
The Lady Pirates fell 94-62 to no. 3 Gulf Coast in their final home game on Wednesday. The Commodores jumped out to an early 35-23 lead in the 1st quarter and never looked back.
Ta’Sheanne Armstrong was the leading scorer for the Lady Pirates as she tallied 12 points and Mylashia Yancey joined her in double figures adding 10 points.
The Pirate Softball team won three out of four games this weekend to bring their record to 11-6. They picked up a win over Snead State and took two from Chattanooga State while the only loss came to NJCAA Division II no. 3 ranked Jones County. Continue reading below for individual game details.
Game 1 – PSC 1 Lamar State 0
The Pirates were able to come out on top of a pitcher’s duel in game one versus Lamar State Port Arthur. Sophomore Erika Greek threw a complete game shutout and only gave up two hits while striking out eight. The Pirates got on the board in the 3rd inning when Lia Johnson led off with a single and eventually scored on a single off the bat of Emily Corbitt.
After a slow start the Lady Pirates found themselves trailing by eight points after the 1st quarter, but used an offensive explosion in the 2nd to finally take a lead they never relinquished to Northwest Florida. Ta’Sheanne Armstrong and Nia Johnson provided a spark off the bench to combine for 24 of the Lady Pirates 34 points in the 2nd quarter.
